Falsification of history? Reconstruction of Bauhaus Masters’ Houses, Dessau
In der Nähe des Bauhaus-Schulgebäudes Dessau liegt die Meisterhaus-Siedlung: Drei Doppelhäuser und ein Einzelhaus nach Entwürfen von Gropius, errichtet 1925/26, in denen Bauhaus-Professoren (die „Meister“) gelebt haben. Seit 1996 gehören sie zum Unesco-Welterbe.
Close to the Bauhaus School Building Dessau, you find the Masters’ Houses: three semi-detached houses and one single villa, built after Gropius’ designs in 1925/26 where the Bauhaus professors (the „Masters“) lived. Since 1996, this ensemble is Unesco World Heritage Site.

Einzelhaus Gropius, Direktorenhaus, 1945 bei Bombenangriff zerstört, 1956 ersetzt durch ein DDR-typisches Einfamilienhaus mit Satteldach, in dem heute ein Andenken- und Buchladen mit Café untergebracht ist.
Single House Gropius, Head master’s house, destroyed by bombing in 1945, replaced by one family house in typical GDR-style with gabled roof, today there is a souvenir and book shop with café.
Die noch bestehenden Häuser wurden nach 1990 z. T. mit privaten Mitteln rekonstruiert. Sie sind heute der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich und zeigen verschiedene Ausstellungen.
The still existing houses have been reconstructed after 1990, financed partly by private means. Today they are open to public and present several exhibitions.
Was mit den beiden nicht mehr existierenden Bauhaus-Gebäuden geschehen soll, wird zur Zeit z.T. heftig diskutiert. Soll die zerstörte Haushälfte Moholy-Nagy rekonstruiert werden?
But to do about the destroyed Bauhaus buildings – a heavily debated issue recently. Should the destroyed Moholy Nagy’s half of the semi-detached house be reconstructed?
Noch drängender: Was soll mit dem Gropius-Haus passieren? Das 50er-Jahre-Haus wurde auf dem Keller des Gropius-Hauses errichtet – soll es restauriert, das alte Gropius-Haus wiederhergestellt oder etwas ganz anderes, neues errichtet werden?
And even more controversial: What about Gropius’ single villa? The building from the 1950s has been built on the foundations of the old house – renovate it, reconstruct the old Gropius House, or maybe replace it by something totally new?
Der Direktor der Stiftung Bauhaus Dessau etwa lehnt eine Rekonstruktion als Geschichtsfälschung ab. Das 50er-Jahre-Gebäude ist ein historisches Zeugnis der DDR-Geschichte und damit ebenso erhaltungwürdig. Was also tun? Stichwort: Stadtschloss Berlin…!?
The director of the Bauhaus Dessau trust rejects a reconstruction as falsification of history. The 1950s building is a historical testimony of GDR history and thus worth perserving, too. What to do? Key note: City Palace Berlin…?
